What is Hypnotherapy and what is Hypnosis?

Hypnotherapy is guided hypnosis, or a trance-like state of focus and concentration achieved with the help of a clinical hypnotherapist. This trance-like state is similar to being completely absorbed in a book, movie, music, or even one's own thoughts or meditations. In this state, clients can turn their attention completely inward to find and utilize the natural resources deep within themselves that can help them make changes or regain control in certain areas of their life.

Have you ever 'zoned out' while driving? Your unconscious competence enables you to drive safely even while another part of your mind daydreams. You might arrive at your destination with barely any conscious memory of the journey you just took!

What about becoming deeply engrossed in a movie or a book? Two hours can fly by without you noticing. Try doing the same thing standing in the rain waiting for a bus! Your brain is clearly operating differently with respect to memory and time in these two situations.

Hypnosis is not a magic trick. It’s an altered state of consciousness that hypnotists induce via the power of suggestion. Hypnotists may use relaxation techniques, key words, guided imagery, or some combination of these to help clients slowly relax. Then, while under hypnosis, hypnotists make suggestions about changes in behavior.

The idea behind hypnosis is that, even when the conscious mind wants to do something, the unconscious mind might not fully accept this change. Hypnotists, under the right conditions, can subtly alter the effects the unconscious mind has on the conscious mind and help bring about behavioral changes. Some hypnotists use hypnosis to help gradually alter a client’s perceptions. A person struggling with pain, for example, might undergo hypnosis to help him or her see the pain as pressure. Evidence-based scientific research suggests that hypnotism is real and effective. Research shows hypnosis impacts multiple brain regions. In one study, participants experienced a 42% reduction in pain.

However, Hypnosis is not so powerful that it forces the client to accept all and any suggestion made but the hypnotherapist. Nor will it make a client do something that they don’t want to do, or would go against their values. A Hypnotherapist is a navigator, not the Captain. We never have control of the wheel. We rely on the power of the client’s mind. Their resourcefulness, experience and abilities. We are mostly concerned with eliciting those dissociated, hidden, or otherwise inaccessible resources.

What can Hypnotherapy do for you?

Hypnotherapy has many applications and can be used to treat anxiety, phobias, substance abuse including tobacco, sexual dysfunction, undesirable spontaneous behaviors, and bad habits. It can be used to help improve sleep, learning disorders, communication, and relationship issues. Hypnotherapy can aid in pain management and help resolve medical conditions such as digestive disorders, skin issues, and gastrointestinal side effects of pregnancy and chemotherapy. It can also be used by dentists to help patients control their fears or to treat teeth grinding and other oral conditions.

Can anyone be hypnotized?

Generally speaking, yes. Any person of normal intelligence who is willing to follow instructions can be hypnotized. The exception would be individuals who suffer from severe mental illness such as Schizophrenia.

Some may say, "Well, I can't be hypnotized." These people have been misinformed, mostly by social media. Hypnosis is a natural state which everyone moves in and out of throughout each day. Many of our everyday normal activities are actually performed under hypnosis without us being aware of it.

An example of hypnosis is playing video games. Some people can play video games for hours at a time. If someone were to talk to you while you were playing, you would be able to respond. Yet another good example of a hypnotic state is being on the computer. People who are using a computer are focused on what they are doing, but can intelligently answer the phone when it rings.

So, hypnosis is no different to playing video games or working on a computer. Most people engaged in these activities would not think they are in a trance, but they are. They are just in a light hypnotic trance.

For most people, it's possible to get out of a hypnotic state any time by counting down.

What to expect?

Although there are different techniques, hypnotherapy is generally performed in a calm, therapeutic environment. The therapist will guide you into a relaxed, focused state and ask you to think about experiences and situations in positive ways that can help you change the way you think and behave. Unlike some dramatic portrayals of hypnosis in movies, books, or on stage, you will not be unconscious, asleep, or in any way out of control of yourself. You will hear the therapist’s suggestions, but it is up to you to decide whether or not to act on them. Hypnosis can also be done effectively through video conferencing platforms i.e. Zoom or Google Meet or whatsapp!

The length of treatment will vary depending on the nature and severity of the problem. Our aim is to keep treatments as brief as possible and to review progress with you regularly to ensure it is meeting your needs. Often, noticeable changes will occur after just a single session. Experience tells us that three to six sessions are typically sufficient to bring about change that lasts.

Each therapy session is usually expected to last from 45 minutes to 90 minutes.
